In a salute to Mother’s Day, here are two stories of mothers and daughters who provided that for one another. They also found extended family within the university community through the Black Leadership Network and Latino Scholarship Program, which offer mentorship, networking and workshops, along with financial assistance.

The summer before Crystal Vazquez started at USF, she had to spend most of the money she’d saved for tuition on a new transmission for her car. She considered pausing her education, but her parents encouraged her to sign up for classes and have faith that the finances would work out. The Leung Family Scholarship was exactly what she needed.

Record number of donors support University of South Florida during Giving Week
From April 10–14, alumni and friends came together to champion a wide variety of programs, from student scholarships to community health care initiatives. Of the 7,064 Giving Week donors, 1,152 gave to the university for the first time. In total, the USF Foundation received more than $6.6 million during Giving Week.

Meet Dr. Jennifer Seminerio
Seminerio specializes in gastroenterology, treating painful and debilitating illnesses such as Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. She is the medical director of the new Inflammatory Bowel Disease Center at the USF Health Morsani Center for Advanced Healthcare, the first multidisciplinary care center for inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) on Florida’s west coast. She’s also an assistant professor and associate program director of gastroenterology in the USF Health Morsani College of Medicine.

The University of South Florida community is deeply saddened by the sudden passing of Samuel P. “Sam” Bell, who is considered the “father” of the USF College of Public Health. He and his wife, former USF president Betty Castor have been deeply connected to the University of South Florida’s growth and success for decades.
