Each morning, the late Walter Heinlein welcomed the day with Classical WSMR 89.1. Though he didn’t come from a musical family, he vividly recalled how the Lone Ranger theme sparked his lifelong appreciation for orchestral sound. A quiet soul, Walter found harmony in the station’s timeless melodies, which became the soundtrack to his daily routines.

In gratitude for the joy WSMR brought him, Walter gave modestly but faithfully for more than 20 years — his support a steady refrain in the station’s history.

In 2022, the music of his life shifted to a more somber key when his beloved wife, Sharon, passed away at age 73. On her obituary page, Walter composed a heartfelt tribute:
“Sharon was my wife, my crutch, my advisor and, above all, my friend for over 50 years.”

Together, Walter and Sharon ran a successful event rental business in New York. Sharon was the virtuoso planner, transforming gatherings into unforgettable performances, while Walter handled the rentals with quiet precision.

To honor Sharon’s memory, Walter composed a final, generous coda: he earmarked $2.1 million in his estate to establish the Sharon Heinlein Endowment in support of Classical WSMR. This enduring gift ensures the music they both cherished will continue to play on, enriching the lives of listeners for generations.

“Walter Heinlein’s enduring support of Classical WSMR is a beautiful reflection of how deeply music can touch our lives,” says JoAnn Urofsky, general manager of WUSF Public Media.

Through this final act of generosity, the melodies that once filled Walter’s days — and the love he shared with Sharon — will continue to echo like a timeless symphony in the hearts of all who tune in.
