Support the Recovery of the USF Marine Science Laboratory
Help students, faculty, and researchers recover and rebuild after the devastating fire at the USF St. Petersburg campus.
Support the Marine Science FundOn Saturday, May 2, the USF community experienced a heartbreaking loss when a devastating fire engulfed the Marine Science Laboratory on the USF St. Petersburg campus. While we are grateful that no one was injured, the impact on students, faculty and decades of vital marine research is significant.
For generations, the USF College of Marine Science has been a leader in ocean and environmental research, preparing scientists whose work protects our coastal communities and ecosystems. Today, that mission continues and our students and researchers need the support of the Bulls community more than ever as they begin the long process of recovery and rebuilding.
Initial assessments indicate that the building is likely a total loss.
We’ve heard over the past few days from countless colleagues, friends and supporters of the College of Marine Science. Many have asked for ways to support the students, staff and faculty affected by the fire at the Marine Science Lab.
The USF Foundation has launched the Marine Science Operating Fund through which individuals and organizations can make financial contributions that will go directly to the college.
Duke Energy and its state president, Melissa Seixas, came forward with a generous lead gift of $50,000.
“Even though recovering from this devastating event will be such a long haul, we wanted to help immediately,” says Seixas. “I’m hopeful that other organizations and leaders will step up and support as well.”
Donations to this fund will help provide critical resources for displaced research efforts, replace damaged equipment, support students and accelerate the recovery of this essential facility.
Together, we can help ensure that discovery, innovation and student success continue to thrive at USF no matter the obstacles.
