Project World Health

Who We Are

Project World Health (PWH) is a unique organization founded and led by medical students at the University of South Florida. Established in 1991 with the mission of providing basic health care services to impoverished communities abroad, PWH aims to meet the needs of underserved communities by providing sustainable patient care, health education and preventative medicine.

Initially, the group provided medical supplies and assisted on service trips to underserved populations in Colombia, Haiti, Honduras and Cuba. In 2000, PWH took its first trip to Jarabacoa, Dominican Republic, with only a handful of students, one physician and one nurse. Since then, over 900 PWH students have volunteered on medical outreach trips to Jarabacoa. The size of the group has grown from just 13 on the first trip to Cuba, to peaking at over 100 students, nurses and physicians on the 2019 Jarabacoa trip.

What We Do

With our 2023 trip to the Dominican Republic, we are proud to say that in the span of five days, our team of students, residents, dentists, nurses and other volunteers worked together with local leaders, clinics and organizations to treat more than 400 patients and dispense over $10,000 worth of medications. With the donations from our supporters, we know we can have an even greater impact in 2024.

Your Impact

In February 2024, PWH will return to Jarabacoa to examine patients, make diagnoses, perform minor procedures, prescribe medications and distribute hygiene products. Our interprofessional group of physicians, residents, nurses, pharmacists and USF medical students expect to serve hundreds of individuals over the course of the week. For many patients, this will be the only health care they receive for the year.

Your contribution will help raise money for medication and supplies that cannot be donated, as well as support travel expenses involved in recruiting a dedicated group of skilled volunteers.
