Support the Arthur Guilford Diversity Fund in SLP

The Project/Challenge

There is a demand for practitioners of different ethnicities, orientations, backgrounds, and abilities in the field of Speech Language Pathology. Inclusion and diversity in all its dimensions are core values that permeate the teaching, research, and service activities within the College of Behavioral and Community Sciences (CBCS). Applicants to this scholarship are individuals who identify as a member of an under-represented population and those who plan to pursue a career that will have an impact on these communities.

Make an even bigger impact! A generous donor will make a $5,000 donation to the Arthur M. Guilford Diversity Fund if the project is able to reach our goal of 30 gifts by April 8th!

Who We Are

Dr. Arthur Guilford along with alumni from the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders (CSD), established this scholarship to increase accessibility and representation of minorities within the field of Speech Language Pathology. The mission of the CSD, within the CBCS, is to foster human communication through conducting research that increases the scientific understanding of communication in both typically-developing and communication-disordered populations, operating teaching clinics that provide high quality diagnostic and treatment services to diverse populations, and advocating for and raising awareness of the communication needs and the rights of Deaf people and those with speech, language and hearing disorders.

Your Impact

With an increasingly diverse population, it is critical that there are a greater number of individual providers that “look and think similarly” to those persons with disabilities that have communication and related disorders and differences.  We must promote and support careers in speech-language pathology to underrepresented groups. During his career, Dr. Guilford was not only a visionary but an activist in empowering, fostering and supporting both students and faculty from diverse backgrounds to promote experience, sensitivity and breath of perspective to better address the growing needs of persons providing as well as presenting with diverse communication needs. This scholarship will help to continue Dr. Guilford’s dream, work, and legacy.

Contributions to the Arthur M. Guilford Diversity fund can increase the possibility to endow the fund—ensuring that a scholarship can be awarded in perpetuity to SLP students that can help grow the diversity of the program.
