Join David Mearns and help empower future global explorers by contributing to the USF Education Abroad Scholarship Fund!

Inspired by the USF in London alumni-student dinner last June, USF College of Marine Science alumnus and renowned shipwreck hunter David Mearns has generously offered to match contributions up to $2,500 to help endow the USF Study Abroad Scholarship Fund.

This endowment will ensure that more USF students can embark on life-changing global experiences each year. With current scholarships meeting only 10% of the demand, your support is more crucial than ever.

Who We Are

USF Education Abroad promotes career readiness skills vital to the global workforce by creating high-impact, innovative and accessible international experiences for students that align with academic and career goals.

Fast Facts:

  • USF is third in Florida and 30th in the U.S. among public institutions for the number of students studying abroad!

  • USF World awards close to $150,000 in study-abroad scholarships each year. This funds only 10% of student needs.

  • 38% of USF study abroad participants are first-generation college students.

  • 21% of USF study abroad participants are Pell Grant-eligible.

  • 52% of USF study abroad participants are from a diverse student population.

What We Do

In 2023-2024 approximately 1,570 USF students traveled to 67 countries as part of a study abroad program. Scholarships make a huge difference in ensuring USF students have access to a life-changing global experience. Current scholarship resources meet only 10% of student needs.

Your Impact

Endowing the fund will provide an annual opportunity, in perpetuity, to support USF students seeking to study abroad. It will also allow USF to expand its support for student participation in accessible and affordable study-abroad programs.

According to NAFSA, independent studies show that studying abroad:

  • expand employment and career opportunities

  • significantly increases intercultural understanding

  • improves grade point average during the program and after

  • contributes to retention and graduation rates

The formative impact is immeasurable, according to USF global alumna Sarah Glaser.
