The Impact

Catastrophic flooding, power outages and uncertainty of where to call home is widespread in Puerto Rico and Southwest Florida. After the devastation caused by Hurricane Fiona and Hurricane Ian, USF faculty, staff and students are coordinating efforts to support the healthcare system of our neighbors in need.

What Your Gifts Will Do

A contribution made today will help USF Health purchase, transport and deliver medical and non-medical supplies and equipment in the coming weeks and months.  Travel expenses of trained USF faculty, staff, medical residents and students to assist in the relief efforts are needed now as well.

USF Health, in partnership with the Hope and Health Project and Kforce, provided extensive humanitarian relief after Hurricane Maria made landfall and decimated Puerto Rico in 2017.  This relief was found in the form of delivering life-saving medications and food supplies, the deployment of physicians and healthcare staff and the development of an emergency preparedness healthcare protocol for future disasters.

Our previous experience coupled with this new protocol allowed us to pivot quickly after Hurricane Ian swept through the majority of Florida and Hurricane Fiona devastated Puerto Rico.  We are working with affected community leaders and, with your support, we will continuously assess and meet the needs of our neighbors who lost everything by delivering supplies and compassionate care.

Who We Are

The USF Health relief teams are led by Dr. Asa Oxner and Dr. Elimarys Perez-Colon, alongside Ray Morganti from Kforce and Dr. Jose Colon from Hope and Health Project, our trusted community partners. They are boots on the ground, visiting local clinics and conducting rapid needs assessments.

Dr. Perez-Colon noted, "It could have been us. Seeing the destruction and desperation in their faces is heartbreaking. We saw ourselves in them. It was supposed to come our way, until the last minute. It could have been us."
