The Project

In Mark Hafen’s more than 20-year career at USF, he taught urban environmental policy, coastal management and planning, and climate change policy. His research contributions include a National Science Foundation-funded initiative on scenario planning for sea level rise in Tampa Bay and an edited volume on planning for sea level rise. From 2014-21, Hafen served as program director for the USF Master of Urban and Regional Planning (MURP), leading the program to earn accreditation with the Planning Accreditation Board. Hafen’s dedication to student success was recognized at USF through his Master Instructor status, and by the many students he inspired to pursue community-engaged careers.

In celebration of his retirement, Hafen established the Mark R. Hafen Diversity scholarship with a $10,000 gift. This scholarship will provide support to MURP students with preference given to diverse students from historically underrepresented or marginalized groups. The goal of raising $15,000 will permanently endow this fund — ensuring that a scholarship can be awarded into perpetuity to MURP students that can help grow the diversity of the program.

Who We Are

The USF School of Public Affairs is a group of diverse interdisciplinary practitioners. The Master of Urban and Regional Planning program has a strong commitment to community-engaged insight and to making differences in the Tampa Bay metropolitan region. As part of a Research I institution, the MURP program engages in innovative, applied research, delivers quality education to a diverse student population and provides public service to the surrounding community.

We prepare leaders in the field of urban and regional planning to meet the local community, national and global needs. Fundraising for this scholarship is being championed by a group of Tampa Bay area planning practitioners committed to growing diversity in the urban and regional planning profession.

The Impact

Scholarships funded at the $25,000 level are permanently endowed — meaning an enduring legacy for Hafen’s dedication to student success — as well as an annual opportunity in perpetuity to help diverse students find opportunity through the USF MURP program.
