Who We Are
Tampa Bay Street Medicine (TBSM) is a USF Health medical student-led organization dedicated to improving the health of the Tampa Bay area’s vulnerable populations. Through our two student-run free clinics — one serving the unhoused at a local shelter and another assisting uninsured refugees — we provide essential medical care, hygiene supplies and health education to over 600 individuals from historically disenfranchised groups.
What We Do
TBSM is committed to improving health outcomes for our community’s most vulnerable residents. Research shows that noncitizens in the U.S. face significant barriers to accessing affordable prescription medications, a challenge our patients confront daily. As a free clinic, we can offer prescriptions only to uninsured patients, who must then pay for medications entirely out-of-pocket. For patients at the Tampa Hope shelter and our Refugee Clinic, this cost is often prohibitive.
Many of our patients are unemployed or in transition — seeking stable work, housing and health insurance. We leverage resources like Walmart’s $4 medication list and GoodRx coupons, but even with these, many essential medications remain out of reach. For those with uncontrolled medical conditions, this financial barrier creates a cycle that prevents them from achieving the health stability needed to pursue employment.
Our goal is to improve health outcomes and quality of life for our unhoused and refugee populations, addressing a critical gap in health equity.
