The Project/Challenge
As democracy faces new challenges and growing uncertainty in the 21st century, the Center for Sustainable Democracy at the University of South Florida is working to ensure the system endures — and evolves. This nonpartisan, interdisciplinary research center is dedicated to studying the shifting landscape of democracy and civil society, both at home and abroad.
Who We Are
Established to confront the complex challenges and seize the growing opportunities facing democracy today, the Center for Sustainable Democracy grounds its mission in three foundational pillars:

These focus areas guide the center’s efforts to better understand how democracy is shaped and sustained, from the decisions of political and civic leaders to the voices of journalists and everyday citizens. By examining the dynamic interplay between leadership, information and community, the center aims to understand the roles of political and civic leaders, journalists and ordinary individuals involved in supporting democracy.
The Impact
Sustainable democracy relies on governance, information, and societal processes that empower individuals to make informed decisions and actively participate in public life. We are dedicated to researching and promoting the ways political and civic leaders, journalists and everyday citizens uphold democratic values in Florida, across the United States and around the world. Now more than ever, an informed public is essential.
The Center for Sustainable Democracy serves as a catalyst for change by equipping citizens with the knowledge and tools to engage meaningfully in society, strengthen democratic institutions and create positive impacts at both individual and community levels.
