History
Esther Schneid was a wife, a mother and a fierce advocate for combatting bigotry and anti-Semitism.
Like so many women raised in the 1930s and ’40s, Esther was not afforded the opportunity to pursue a higher education. Determined to make a difference, Esther dedicated her life to enriching the community through her work with the Anti-Defamation League, Schaarai Zedek Sisterhood, the Florida Orchestra and other nonprofit organizations.
After her mother passed in 2004, University of South Florida alumna Nancy Schneid decided to honor Esther’s legacy by creating a scholarship for first-generation women at USF. Established under the umbrella of Women in Leadership & Philanthropy (WLP), the Esther Schneid Memorial Scholarship provides deserving students with financial aid to pursue their college dreams.
“My mother was a brilliant woman who was not afforded the opportunity of a higher education,” explained Nancy. “That is why I wanted her scholarship to benefit first generation students at USF. I know she is smiling over those who have had the benefit of her scholarship — they are certainly women to be proud of.”
By housing the scholarship within WLP, Esther Schneid Memorial Scholars receive so much more than just financial aid. The incredible support WLP provides through mentoring and programming prepares these scholars to be the next generation of community and philanthropic leaders.
“It is my life passion to continue to support and help women make a difference and be heard,” said Nancy. “Women have made great strides over the years, but there is always more to do. I’m proud to be a member of an organization that is making such an impact in the community, and I know my mother would be proud, too.”
