An Intellectual Crossroads
The Nelson Poynter Memorial Library is a global gateway to learning for USF St. Petersburg students, faculty and the community. It is a library reimagined: inviting, creative and collaborative, a place to absorb knowledge in any form.
It is an intellectual crossroads where the community and the university engage through public lectures and exhibits in an inspiring space overlooking Bayboro Harbor. We seek to be the intellectual center of the university, equipped with the tools required in the digital age.
Our transformation has only just begun.
Expanding the library’s digital collections is our highest priority. The work of students and faculty comprise the heart of the digital archive, begun in 2011 and housing more than 6,400 items. It is intended to be the sum total of the intellectual output of USF St. Petersburg, including every student thesis and master’s project.
We also seek to preserve history by digitizing 600 oral histories and signature collections of Floridiana and marine science. Reaching these goals will require more robust computer capabilities, a world-class digital asset management system, and skilled staff.
Building the Future
Continuing the library’s evolution into an interactive learning center is also critical. Enhancing collaborative learning will require more group study areas with computer connections, interactive screens and whiteboards. Bolstering independent study will require more technology-enhanced quiet areas.
We also seek to expand our service to the community with additional space for public lectures and exhibits and an expanded Special Collections Reading Room so the public can more readily explore our unique archival collections.
Protecting and preserving the rare material in Special Collections will require secure, climate-controlled shelving.
The Nelson Poynter Memorial Library is committed to the pursuit and creation of knowledge. Please join us in this exciting period of transformation.
